چکیده

An investigation has been made of the frequency characteristics of the threshold voltage of domain instabilities induced by an electric field in both homogeneously and homeotropically oriented liquid crystal layers. The mesogens had the nematic and smectic A phases and their anisotropy of the electrical conductivity changed its sign at the critical temperature somewhat above the nematic-smectic transition point. All the instabilities observed were of the electrohydrodynamic nature. The experimental results were accounted for in terms of the isotropic and CarrHelfrich mechanisms.

Electron Spin Resonance Studies of Anisotropic Ordering, Spin Relaxation, and Slow Tumbling in Liquid Crystalline Solvents. 3. Smecticd

In this work the nonaxial ordering and spin relaxation of PD-Tempone spin probe in several liquid crystalline solvents exhibiting smectic A and B phases were studied utilizing methods previously employed by Polnaszek and Freed for the study of nematic liquid crystals. The results rleported here for the isotropic and nematic phases are generally in accord with those obtained previously. An analy...

Macroscopic dynamics of chiral smectic C

2014 The hydrodynamic equations describing the macroscopic behaviour of chiral smectic C are presented. To derive these equations the nature of the spontaneously broken continuous symmetries is considered and their consequences for the hydrodynamics are pointed out. Similarities and differences to achiral smectic C and cholesteric liquid crystals are investigated in some detail. The influence a...

Smectic layer instabilities in liquid crystals.

Scientists aspire to understand the underlying physics behind the formation of instabilities in soft matter and how to manipulate them for diverse investigations, while engineers aim to design materials that inhibit or impede the nucleation and growth of these instabilities in critical applications. The present paper reviews the field-induced rotational instabilities which may occur in chiral s...

Assembly of porous smectic structures formed from interlocking high-symmetry planar nanorings.

Materials comprising porous structures, often in the form of interconnected concave cavities, are typically assembled from convex molecular building blocks. The use of nanoparticles with a characteristic nonconvex shape provides a promising strategy to create new porous materials, an approach that has been recently used with cagelike molecules to form remarkable liquids with "scrabbled" porous ...

Liquid Crystals Today Home - Book Information

This book is a follow up to the volume Nematics and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals by the same authors in the Liquid Crystal Book Series edited by G.W. Gray, J.W. Goodby and A. Fukuda. Here, the authors, two well known experts from the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Lyon and the Université Paris-Sud, deal with liquid crystalline phases endowed with long range positional order in one or more dimensions,...
